History
Somnath Temple has a mythological story behind it, and a legend behind it. Lord Chandra (Moon God) was very proud of its allure and beauty according to Hindu Purana. For this reason, he was cursed by his father-in - law, Daksha, to become smaller. Moon God prayed to Lord Shiva at Prabhas to rid him of this curse. Lord Shiva was content by his difficult penance and raising the curse to some extent. By the Grace of Heaven, God's creation contributed to the moon's regular waning. The present temple is to be restored for the seventh time. Moon God himself created the very first Somnath temple (Lord Shiva) which is considered a Gold structure. During the 7th century Somnath Temple was reconstructed in Gujarat by the Maitraka kings of Vallabhi. Nevertheless, the Sind Arab governor -Junayad demolished the second structure in 725. The third structure was built in 815 by Nagabhata II, who was a King of Pratihara. This magnificent structure has been emarginated from red sandstone. In 1024, MahmudGhazni raided the city, taking camel-loads of jewels and valuables from here. Malwa's Paramara King Bhoj and Gujarat's Solanki King Bhima (Anhilwara) took the initiative between 1026-1042 to restore the temple again. For the fifth time however, Kumarpal replaced the wooden structure with a stone structure. As a result the temple was demolished by Delhi's Sutanat in 1394.Eventually, the Mughal Emperor- Aurangzeb made the final attack in 1706. The present temple was built in the Government company by Shree Somnath Trust in 1995.
